Women’s Shelter and Rural Empowerment (SRE)

Description

This initiative supports women in a rural area by offering two key services:

• an anti-violence centre, to which women can turn for information, advice and support;
• sheltered residential facilities, which offer women in situations of violence and their children refuge and support by qualified staff.

SRE embraces Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) principles, serving the collective interest without profit by supporting victims of gender-based violence regardless of origin, thereby combatting rural isolation. Beyond providing assistance, they focus on promoting self-empowerment and work intersectionally across gender, race, and class.

This research focuses on how a women’s shelter embodies SSE in a rural context.
