Management of environmental and socio-economic effects of natural disasters on rural people (SOS)

Description

This initiative allows us to explore how to support people affected by natural disasters in rural areas.

• AFAD was established to prevent natural disasters and minimize disaster-related damages in rural areas, plan and coordinate post-disaster response, and promote cooperation among various government agencies.
• AKUT is an NGO to search, assist and rescue people from where natural disasters happen.
• ATSO is a provincial chamber of commerce and industry but as the city suffers so much from natural disasters, they develop specific projects and allocate funds to help farmers to find sources to continue for agricultural activities and to provide sustainable development.

Aim

Many regions in Türkiye frequently experience natural disasters, which pose significant challenges to sustainable agricultural production. The hypothesis elaborated for the SOS case study suggests that these disasters not only disrupt production but also exacerbate socio-economic vulnerabilities among affected producers. In this context, the social and solidarity economy may play a crucial role, particularly in marginalised rural areas where social inclusion and poverty reduction are key issues to address.
